Carpet & Rug Cleaning

Carpet and or rugs feel lovely underfoot in your home but they can quickly get dirty, especially in high traffic areas. It will be prone to dirty shoes, spills, stains and general grime so to keep it looking at its best and ensure it lasts longer we have some simple tips.

Whether you have carpet or rugs to keep them looking at their best for longer you should vacuum once a week to remove dust and dirt rather than letting it build up. If you have pets or children then more often if you can.

A carpet deep clean should be done once or twice a year at least. Some people hire a professional carpet cleaning company to go through their whole house once a year but if you have your Eco Solutions Grime Go then you can do this yourself.

Tools For The Job

    • Strong suction vacuum
    • Eco Solutions Grime Go
    • Scrubbing brush for any deep-rooted stains
    • Non-coloured cloths
    • Microfiber cloth
    • Kitchen roll

Routine Carpet & Rug Clean

At least once a month try to do a good carpet and rug clean to keep it looking at its best. This means dust, grime and smells don’t embed themselves into your carpet or rug which makes them harder to remove, as well as making it look old and tired.

Using a strong suction vacuum:

    • Lift up any rugs and furniture and give the carpet a good vacuum
    • If you have pets then using a rubber edged shower type tool to rub over the carpet or rug will gather a lot of the pet hair before you start
    • Use one of your vacuum’s tools to slowly go along the carpet edges next to walls and skirting boards.
    • Use the vacuums carpet, not wooden flooring setting as this will be the most effective at removing dust and grime
    • To achieve the best results, vacuum slowly and move backwards and forward several times over areas subject to heavy traffic
    • Empty your vacuum as you go if you need to

Pets, Children & High Traffic Areas

If you have pets or children or your carpet or rug is in a high traffic area then it can sometimes start to emit odours. People walking into a hallway with wet shoes, even if they take them off when they get in mean your carpet or rug can quickly start to let off nasty smells.

A quick way to freshen carpets and rugs is to sprinkle baking soda over the area. Leave it for at least an hour and then vacuum it away.

When you have finished clean out your vacuum and its filters so it doesn’t have a chance to clog it up and make it smell.

Ad Hoc Dry Stain Removal

    • If you notice a stain on your carpet or rug then you are more likely to remove it if you attempt to do so straight away
    • If the stain is dry, use your vacuum on carpet setting over the area
    • Spray the stain with a liberal amount of Grime Go
    • Leave it to work for 30 minutes
    • A microfibre cloth can be used to remove the excess product
    • The carpet or rug can be lifted out with the help of a cloth and a bucket of warm water
    • As the water becomes dirty, change it
    • You may need to repeat the process if there are still stains once it has dried
    • Open all of the doors and windows if needed so that the carpet or rug can dry naturally
    • When the area is dry, vacuum on the carpet setting to lift all the fibres

Ad Hoc Wet Spill Stain Removal

    • Never leave a liquid spill until later to clear up, as the longer, it is left, the harder it will be to remove
    • Blot up the spill with some kitchen roll or a cloth. Kitchen roll is great as its highly absorbent
    • Never use a coloured cloth as if it gets wet the colour could run into your carpet
    • Blot it rather than rub as rubbing the spill can push the stain further into the carpet or rug. Blotting will lift the excess liquid away
    • Spray the stain with a liberal amount of Grime Go
    • Leave it to work for 30 minutes
    • Use a microfibre cloth to blot away any excess product
    • Gently lift the product out of the carpet with a cloth and a bucket of warm water
    • Change the water if it becomes dirty
    • If there are still stains, repeat the process
    • Open all doors and windows to allow the carpet or rug to dry naturally
    • When the area is dry, vacuum on the carpet setting

Carpet CleanerAd Hoc Solid Stain Removal

    • Again, never leave it a time before you clear it up as it will more likely stain your carpet or rug
    • If you have an area where food has been spilt or mud has been walked in that’s slightly wet then you should use a flat-edged utensil or tool to lift up the solid/wet substance
    • Never rub the area, or try to pick the solid with your fingers as this can push it into your carpet or rug and make it more difficult to remove
    • When the substance has been removed, spray the area with a liberal amount of Grime Go
    • Leave it to work for 30 minutes
    • Blot away the excess product using a microfibre cloth
    • Use a cloth and a bucket of warm water to gently lift the product out of the carpet or rug
    • Change the water if it becomes dirty
    • Repeat again if there are still any stains
    • Allow the carpet or rug to dry naturally and open all doors and windows if you need to
    • Vacuum on the carpet setting to lift the carpet or rug fibres

If you notice crumbs on your carpet then it’s best to remove them as quickly as you can before they sink into the carpet or rug and make it look dull or flatten its pile.

Use a high suction vacuum, a lint roller is often easier than getting your full-sized vacuum out, or you can sweep it up using a hard brushed dustpan and brush.

Annual Carpet & Rug Deep Clean

A deep carpet clean will brighten it and refresh the fibres so it seems full and bouncy again. If you are doing your whole house in one go and it seems like too big a job then do it room by room and rotate it over 12 months. An annual clean will restore its fibres and colour and in the end, meaning you won’t have to replace it earlier than you need to.

    • Take all rugs and furniture off the floor and vacuum the carpet using slow backwards and forwards movements
    • By rubbing a rubber edged shower tool over the carpet or rug before vacuuming, you will gather a lot of pet hair
    • Whilst vacuuming, use one of the vacuum’s tools to slowly go along the carpet edges next to walls and skirting boards
    • The most effective way to remove dust and grime from your carpet is to use the carpet setting of your vacuum, not the wooden flooring setting
    • To achieve the best results, vacuum slowly and several times over each area
    • Empty your vacuum as you go if you need to
    • Spray your Grime Go onto your Carpet in sections
    • Leave it to work for 30 minutes
    • Blot the excess product away with a microfibre cloth
    • Use a cloth and a bucket of warm water to gently lift the product carpet or rug
    • Change the water as it becomes dirty
    • Repeat again if there are still any stains
    • Start on your next section, work in gridlike sections
    • Allow the carpet or rug to dry naturally and open all doors and windows if you can to help with this
    • Vacuum on the carpet setting when the area has dried and your carpet will look and smell like new again

Upholstery Cleaning

New, clean looking sofa’s, chairs, cushions and soft furnishings make your home look and feel lovely. However, we all know that they can quickly become stained from spills and general day to day grime so keeping on top of them will make them last longer and look good all of the time.

Vacuuming your soft furnishings and mattresses regularly keep them looking at their best. It removes the dust and dirt rather than letting it build up inside of the fabrics. If you have pets or children then you may want to do this more often.

A full sofa clean should be done once or twice a year to keep it looking at its best. You can hire a professional cleaning company to come in and do this, however, if you have your Eco Solutions Grime Go then you can do this yourself. Always test a bit of your sofa or chair in an unnoticeable place first to check it doesn’t impact its colour or any pattern.

Tools For The Job

    • Strong suction vacuum
    • Eco Solutions Grime Go
    • Scrubbing brush for any deep-rooted stains
    • Non-coloured cloths
    • Kitchen roll
    • Microfiber cloth

Routine Soft Furnishings Clean

You should vacuum your soft furnishings at least once a month to keep them looking good. As a result, dust, grime, and smells do not embed themselves into the fabric, which makes them difficult to remove and makes them appear old and tired.

Using a powerful vacuum:

    • Remove all the loose cushions, cushion seats and backs
    • If you have pets, your best option is to rub over the furniture with a rubber edged shower tool to collect the pet hair before you start vacuuming
    • Use one of your flat edged vacuum tools for the flat edges and you should have other tools which will get into all of the furniture edges
    • Use the vacuums carpet setting as this is the most effective for removing dust and grime
    • To achieve the best results, vacuum slowly and several times over each section

Ad Hoc Dry Stain Upholstery Removal

    • If you notice a stain on your upholstery, you are more likely to get rid of it if you try straight away
    • If you need to, use a high suction vacuum on carpet setting and vacuum the area
    • Spray the stain with a liberal amount of Grime Go
    • Leave it to work for 30 minutes
    • Remove the excess product with a microfiber cloth
    • Use warm water and a cloth to gently work the stain out of the upholstery
    • If the water becomes dirty, change it
    • Allow the area to dry naturally
    • You may need to repeat the process if the stain is still there although Grime Go is one of the best stain removal products on the market
    • When it’s dry, give it a light vacuum to bring all the material fibres back to life

Ad Hoc Wet Spill Upholstery Stain Removal

    • Never leave a liquid spill until later to clear up even if its clear liquid as even this can leave a water-like mark
    • Use plenty of kitchen roll or cloth to blot up the liquid. Kitchen roll is very absorbent so good to use in these situations
    • Don’t ever use a coloured cloth as the colour from the cloth could seep onto your upholstery
    • Always blot, never rub as this can push the stain further into the fabric or damage the fabric so when it’s dry you can see where you have been rubbing
    • Spray the stain liberally with Grime Go
    • Leave it for 30 minutes
    • Use a microfibre cloth or kitchen roll to blot away any of the excess Grime Go
    • Use warm water and a cloth to gently lift the product and the stain from the fabric
    • Change the water if it becomes dirty so as not to rub it back into the upholstery
    • Allow the fabric to dry naturally
    • Repeat the process if you need to
    • When the area is dry give it a light vacuum to bring the fibres back to life

Ad Hoc Solid Stain Removal

    • Don’t ever leave any substance on your upholstery for any amount of time as it will likely seep into the fabric and make the stain harder to remove
    • Whatever it is, mud, food, use a flare edged tool to lift the substance off the upholstery material
    • Don’t rub the area or try and pick it up with your fingers as this can push the substance into the fabric making it difficult to remove
    • Spray the area with a liberal amount of Grime Go
    • Leave it to work for 30 minutes
    • Use a microfibre cloth or kitchen roll to blot away the excess product
    • Use warm water and a cloth to lift the product and stain out of the fabric
    • Change the water as it becomes dirty
    • Leave it to dry naturally and repeat again if there are still any marks
    • Vacuum the area to lift the fibres in the material

Whenever you see crumbs on your furniture, it’s best to remove them as soon as possible before they sink into the fibres and make it look dull or flatten the pile.

A lint roller is the easiest way of clearing up small areas rather than getting your vacuum out or you can use a dustpan and brush.

The Importance Of Maintaining Your Vaccum

Looking after your vacuum is also key as if you don’t keep it clean, clear and its filters washed regularly then it will lose its suction and you’ll be leaving a lot of daily dust and grime in your carpets, rugs and upholstery. Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for maintaining it and if you have lost them then you can easily look up online.
